Wikipedia - Dorados de Sinaloa

Club Deportivo Dorados de Sinaloa, simply known as Dorados, is a Mexican professional football club based in Culiacán, Sinaloa. It plays in the Liga de Expansión MX, the second level division of Mexican football.

Dorados was founded on August 9, 2003, in the Primera División A and secured promotion to Mexico's top flight just one year later. In 2016, the club was relegated and has since competed in the Liga de Expansión.

History

First promotion and relegation

On December 20, 2003, the Dorados won their first title in the Apertura 2003 tournament of the Primera División 'A' de México. Guadalupe Castañeda scored the goal, beating the Cobras de Ciudad Juárez. They finished as runners-up in the Apertura 2004, and won the play-off promotion beating León with a goal from Roberto Domínguez and winning the promotion to the Primera División de México just one year after the club was founded. The club was relegated to the Apertura in a 2006 tournament after playing for just two years in the top tier.

Return to Primera División

On July 27, 2015, the Dorados played their first game in the Primera División after 8 seasons in the Liga de Ascenso de México. The game was celebrated in the Banorte Stadium against Jaguares de Chiapas, with a 0–0 final score. Their first 3 points came in the second game of the season on July 31, against Xoloitzcuintles de Tijuana in the Caliente Stadium. Dayro Moreno scored for the North Californian team, but Mauricio Martín Romero scored the first goal of the Dorados in the 2015–16 Liga MX season. The Dorados played and won their first game in the Primera División in 9 years, 1–2. The previous game being on April 22, 2006, when the Dorados beat Jaguares de Chiapas 4–2, with goals from Andrés Orozco, Cristian Patiño, and Pep Guardiola.

Second relegation

On April 16, 2016, after losing 5–2 to Tigres UANL, the Dorados were demoted after just one season in the Primera División de México, finishing in last place in the relegation table of 2015–16 Liga MX season marking the second time the club was relegated to the Ascenso MX.

In September 2018, Diego Maradona was appointed head coach of Dorados. He made his debut on 17 September with a 4–1 victory over Cafetaleros de Tapachula. Maradona guided Dorados to two consecutive finals, though they fell short in both, losing to Atlético San Luis. In June 2019, Maradona's lawyer announced that he would be stepping down from the role, citing health reasons.

Liga de Expansión

In the spring of 2020, Ascenso MX transformed into Liga de Expansión MX, a league focused on the development of youth footballers. Due to this event, Dorados de Sinaloa began operating as a training team for Club Tijuana of Liga MX, since both teams share an owner. Since that year, Dorados has only played in the league playoffs in four of the ten tournaments it has played, due to the club's new policy of prioritizing giving playing time to young players over winning titles.

In the fall of 2024, the team was relocated to Tijuana due to concerns about the public safety situation in Sinaloa.
